HANNAH GARLAND

FINE ARTIST

About

About

Through Garland's process of oil painting, she looks for new ways to present the female perspective through the lens of a woman. Garland uses the female figure to illustrate her thoughts and responses to perception, dysmorphia, and the shadow self. She uses paint to render and manipulate the body into unusual forms using fleshy tones and rich texture. The work is a conversation between the viewer and the paint. The long history of women painting women is a key factor in her process of making. Through story telling and shared experiences, she explores how painting the body is a reflection of self-perception and identity. Garland is most interested in confronting and dismantling societal expectations through rendering the body in dysmorphic forms.

Group Exhibition: Here With Me

In the Spring of 2023, Garland had a group thesis exhibition with Sydney Mills, titled Here With Me, at the DAAP Annex Gallery, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The exhibition consisted of five oil paintings by Garland, and a college work by Mills. Garland's work, titled Shadow Self, presented a body of work exploring dysmorphia, identity, and the shadow self. The work depicted fractured parts of the body abstracted into a singular flesh on the canvas. Shadow Self focused on using light impasto painting techniques to render the paint into flesh tones and rich texture. Using the body and dysmorphic forms, Garland illustrated her thoughts and ideas about body dysmorphia.
